Have you ever heard about AWHONN? The Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) is a non-profit organization. AWHONN’s stated purpose is to promote women’s and newborn health.

AWHONN became a separate independent organization in 1993. Appropriate application of the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) guidelines can help make staffing as safe as possible.

Proper adherence to these staffing guidelines will enable quality care and increase the time nurses spend with patients at the bedside. The combination of experience and skills of maternity ward nurses is another important factor in safe staffing.

Labor and delivery nurses should care for patients when women are inducing labor or choosing a birth plan that does not use pain relievers or epidurals. Each delivery she must be attended by two nurses. One for the mother and one for her baby.

For postpartum and maternity units, the ratio is 1 nurse for every 3-4 couplets (mother and 1 baby) as long as all are considered ‘stable’.

Annual dues cover the cost of membership in both the National Association and the Regional Groups. Membership benefits begin upon acceptance into the Association and payment of dues.

Membership dues are updated on an annual schedule for anniversaries.
